Brian Burke doesn't want his right-hand man straying too far.

The president and general manager of the Maple Leafs feared losing his long-time lieutenant Dave Nonis to one of the summer GM vacancies around the NHL, so he restructured Nonis' contract as senior vice president for another two years, announcing on May 11 that Nonis would stay through 2011-12.

It's believed Nonis had interviewed for the Tampa Bay Lightning job. Burke sounded as if he was resigned to losing Nonis back in April when he admitted that Nonis' experience running the whole show in Vancouver as Burke's successor with the Canucks would make him very attractive to a number of teams compared to other rising execs who hadn't been a No.
