Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Mike Komisarek will miss the rest of the NHL season and will not play for the U.S. Olympic team because of shoulder surgery. The decision to operate in Alabama next week comes after weeks of rehabilitation. Komisarek has been sidelined since Jan. 2 and resumed skating within a week of the injury.

The news ripped through Toronto like a tornado, but it will be a few years before the dust settles on two major trades the Maple Leafs pulled on Sunday.

Wallowing in the Eastern Conference basement, general manager Brian Burke sent four starters to the Calgary Flames, forwards Niklas Hagman, Matt Stajan, Jamal Mayers and defenseman Ian White, for stud defenseman Dion Phaneuf, winger Fredrik Sjostrom and defense prospect Keith Aulie.

About 40 minutes later came another big deal, goaltender Vesa Toskala and winger Jason Blake to Anaheim for netminder Jean-Seabstien Giguere.

"It was a shock," Phaneuf said, and he could have been speaking for a lot of the incoming Leafs.
